GLP-1s - Why are we still whispering about them?

GLP-1s are showing up more and more in midlife circles. On Facebook and Instagram, in mainstream media, quietly spoken about in the gym I work at...

Not occasionally but more regularly.

Women in their 40s and 50s are using them (with numbers rapidly increasing across the globe). Others are weighing it up. And yet the tone around it still feels oddly quiet, maybe with a touch of shame or perhaps for fear of judgment.

I’ve spoken to women who haven’t told close friends they’re on one. Women who feel the need to explain themselves before anyone has even asked a question.

That’s interesting.

Because this isn’t rare anymore.

Midlife shifts things. Oestrogen changes. Body composition changes. Sleep often becomes unpredictable. You can be doing the same training and eating in a similar way and still find your body responding differently.

For some women, a GLP-1 becomes part of the plan. The only part that seems to work  for them now.

For others, it doesn’t.

Neither choice needs defending.

Using a prescription medication to support your health isn’t a moral issue. And not using one doesn’t make you tougher.

What matters is understanding what you’re doing.

GLP-1s suppress appetite. That’s what they’re designed to do. They can make it easier to eat less. They can quieten food noise.

But, and the big BUT here is - they don’t build muscle. They don’t automatically protect your metabolism. And in midlife, muscle is not a small detail.

Rapid weight loss without protecting muscle isn’t the same thing as improving body composition. Muscle supports insulin sensitivity, bone density, strength and stability. It’s protective.

So if you’re using a GLP-1 — or considering it — the important question isn’t whether it’s 'right' or 'wrong.'

It’s whether you have a plan in place.

Are you strength training properly?
Are you eating enough protein even if you’re less hungry?
Are you thinking beyond the next few months?

And if you’re not using one?

The basics don’t change.

Lift well.
Eat well.
Train with purpose.
Think long term.

Different tools but exactly the same foundations.

There’s also increasing discussion around HRT and GLP-1s being used together. Early research that has recently come out suggests supporting oestrogen may influence weight loss outcomes. That makes this space more layered, not less. And quite exciting for many of us.

Which is another reason we need open conversations instead of quiet judgement.

Just to be clear, I don’t prescribe GLP-1s and I don’t sell them.

What I do is work with women in midlife to build strength and protect metabolic health. Whether medication is part of your approach or not, the goal stays the same: stay strong, stay steady, think ahead.

GLP-1s aren’t something to hide.

They’re one of the tools now available to midlife women.

If you’re navigating this space and want structured guidance on how to protect muscle and long-term health while using — or considering — these medications, you can read more about The GLP-1 Bodywise Project for Midlife Women program.

No whispering.

Just grown women making informed decisions.
